I’ve worked on hundreds of gigs as an in-house LD for the Islington Assembly Hall since 2012, and Union Chapel since 2016. In recent years these venues have been my bread and butter, offering a range of different musical styles and challenges that keep me constantly learning and interested.
As a technician I have assisted numerous incoming bands, but I’m more often a lighting designer, working to a brief that can be as precise as cues targetted a verse or a beat, or as uncertain as trying to light an Iranian pop star’s marriage proposal to his girlfriend mid-set.
I also occassionally tour for Cat Power, and lit the Roundhouse, le Trianon (Paris) and Ancienne Belgique (Brussels) for her as well as the Park Stage at the Glastonbury Festival in 2019. You can get a taste of the latter here:
For completely different, and recorded at a lower quality, I have loved lighting bands like 65DaysofStatic:
Some highlights of recent years that really stood out included Nadine Shah, Sarah Blasko, Cate le Bon, Ward Thomas, Dawes, 65DaysofStatic, Republika, Cat Power, Jesca Hoop, The Devil Makes Three, Band of Skulls, 47Soul, Aldous Harding, Richard Dawson, Indigo Girls, Duke Special, Matthew and the Atlas, PP Arnold, Lucy Spraggan and Ashley McBride – among innumerable others.
